Chapter 11
Eyelashes flutter as they drift off into a relaxed slumber. A blue and white outfit, with dinosaurs on it, lies on the side of the crib as Charlie finishes his bottle in just a diaper. I rock in the chair, holding my son, and wonder how life was real before this moment. Validation of everyone that ever told me the love of your child is like nothing else is being realized as I stare at his tiny body and notice pure perfection.
A mobile from Aunt Christa hangs from the brand-new light wood crib thatâs lined with fresh bedding and stuffed animals. The walls are painted a beautiful sky blue, adorned with dinosaur themed wallpaper just along the center. I never even liked dinosaurs before, but now I have developed an obsession with them, and I know Charlie will too.
âKnock, Knock,â Darin says as he enters quietly and takes a seat on the stool in the corner. âI have to go back to work, just wanted to let you know.â
I nod my head without words, trying not to wake him, and if Darin talks any louder, Iâm going to flip out. He pushes himself up and the stool squeaks. Charlie startles, throwing his arms in the air and breaking free from his blanket. I tense up, hoping heâll fall back asleep but instead he starts to whimper.
âGreat job,â I scold Darin, and attempt to quiet Charlie with a pacifier but the plastic nubby in his mouth is irritating him more. âJust go!â I yell.
Darin scurries out of the room, and Iâm left alone with a screaming baby. I bounce him on my lap, faster and faster as the screams increase in volume. Pushing up out of the rocking chair, I put him on my chest and pat him on the back as I walk around the nursery, singing some stupid lullaby the nurse taught me at the hospital.
âHush, Hush, baby. Hush, hush, baby. No more tears. No more tears.â
Charlieâs not grasping the lyrics. The frustration is building, and my muscles are beginning to tense, as the rage boils to the surface. I let out a grunt and look around the room for a solution, but soon realize Iâm alone to handle this. Placing Charlie in the crib, his screams grow even louder until Iâm positive their decibel could break glass.
âI need to get out of here!â I scream and then run out the door. Once outside, his cries are barely noticeable, and I take a moment to breathe in the quietness. The sunshine hits my skin, and the warmth helps my mood settle. I glance down at my wedding band, twisting it on my finger, and wishing Darin was more involved in Charlieâs life. I need him to be a husband, father, and provider. Is that too much to ask?
I contemplate going back inside and lean my head against the front window. Once I hear Charlieâs screams, I take a seat on the porch bench instead. A cardinal lands on the railing, and pecks at a worm it has under its feet.
